When I think of the Sustainable Energy for All initiative, aimed at bringing clean electricity to the 2.3 billion people who don’t have reliable electricity (or any electricity at all), India is one of the first countries that comes to mind. I love that country, and I know that there are many, many people there who could benefit from clean electricity.
There are many companies and organizations helping to bring solar power to the country’s less advantaged. But few are having the impact that Orb Energy is having. “Orb is setting new standards in the Indian solar industry. We have uniquely designed solar photovoltaic and solar water heating systems, and we sell, install, and service most of these directly, through our own branch network, to better control the customer experience. We service residential and commercial customers, and we work with banks to enable our customers to take solar loans,” Orb writes.
“Orb reaches out to rural markets, and serves the under-privileged who lack access to reliable energy. Orb’s branches are primarily situated in smaller market towns, from which it’s staff press out into the villages to identify customers without reliable access to electricity. We do this in conjunction with banks who are eager to lend to villages for complete electrification – thus creating a solar village.”
Launched in 2006, Orb now sells a wide variety of solar electric products, solar water heating products, solar outdoor light products, efficient lights and plug & play accessories. In terms of solar electricity, Orb offers: solectric lanterns, solectric plug & play systems, solectric DC systems, solectric AC systems, solectric hybrid systems, and large solar project development. It offers 5 different solar heating options, outdoor solar LED lamps, outdoor solar CFL lamps, and will also implement solar lighting projects.
Here are a few more videos from the company regarding its offerings:
If you’re in India and looking for solar energy solutions for your home, family, friends, or community, Orb looks like an excellent choice. It was a 2012 runner-up for a Zayed Future Energy Prize award. If you’re in India and looking to work in the solar industry, there are currently (and probably always) several job openings at Orb.
Orb currently has over 160 branches set up in 5 Indian states. It is reportedly India’s #1 provider of solar electric and solar hot water products on a direct sales basis. It has sold tens of thousands of solar systems, benefiting hundreds of thousands of customers in rural and semi-urban parts of India.
I write about a lot of cleantech companies, but this one has really excited me. It’s a winner in my book.
